In the winter.

It has been snowing for two days now, heavily… big fluffy flakes…
The Bregenzerwald lies under a soft, white blanket. The village has grown quieter, less busy; movement is slower, contours softer, people more at peace (one imagines). Tomorrow the sun will blaze down from a blue sky, smiling on Hittisau and caressing the faces of sleeping guests in the Krone until they wake. And soon the downhill and cross-country skiers, serious walkers and gentle amblers will set off for their respective domains of powder slopes, cross-country tracks and silent wintry countryside.

Cross-Country Skiing

Close by the hotel you can join the 42-km (27-mile) circuit for beginners, competent skiers and professionals, classical and skating style. Sample the joys of winter on the sunny village circuit (3 km) and when you are ready follow the 42 km of the border country loipe.

winter hiking

Not everyone can be sporty. All the same, even a short walk can be rewarding. The winter rambling path glistens enticingly at the Krone front door and is just right for the many who enjoy an easier walk. Even the pram with your youngest can trundle along with you. And of course there are lots of winter routes open to the more energetic walkers.

Snowshoe Rambles

There’s nothing quite like the magic of a snowshoe ramble, say our guests – whether you follow the river or ascend the hillside, by day or in the moonlight… Hittisau lays on regular introductory courses, and local outdoor shops have snowshoes for hire. For anything else you need to know, and to arrange bookings, ask for Anna at the Krone reception desk.

Ski Touring

Deep in unspoilt countryside with fox and hare for company, the Krone’s guests find delightful small-scale ski tours available from the Leckner Valleyand Ochsenlager, a far cry from the hard-beaten Alpine circuits. You can get a guide for (human) company or explore on your own: details at the Krone’s reception desk.

Bobsleighing

There are several bobsleighruns within easy reach – try the Hittisberg, Hochhäderich or Rotenberg facilities. Your downhill projectile awaits. And tea and cake for the rosy-cheeked returning speedsters too …

Skiing and Snowboarding

Hittisau’s local mountain, the Hittisberg, has a ski-lift a short distance away from the Krone. Or you could pop over for an hour in the afternoon. And the Hochhäderich (with its child-friendly chair-lift) is only 10 minutes away by car.

Only a little further away, still within easy reach for the Krone’s guests, are the Balderschwang ski slopes (15 min.) and those of the upper Bregenzerwald (25 min. plus). Talk to Angelina at reception. Talk to Angelina at reception.

Horse-drawn Sleigh Rides

Perhaps you fancy gliding like an olden-times Czar or Czarina over the winter landscape, sun beaming down and sleigh bells jingling merrily …? – Just ask at the Krone’s reception desk.
