The Schubertiade was founded in 1976 by the German baritone-singer Hermann Prey in the small town of Hohenems. His intention was to chronologically perform all of Schubert’s pieces at the festival.
In 1991, the festival was relocated to the neighboring town of Feldkirch, and since 2001, the festival’s new domicile is the idyllic Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald. Since 2005, some of the performances have been held at venues in the festival’s birthplace, Hohenems, again.
